Wayfinding: 100 NYC Public Sculptures
consists of directional signs for 100 public sculptures, each containing a drawing of a sculpture and precise directions and distances between the sculpture and directional posts. Wayfinding invites the public on journeys to find the sculptures and contemplates how the journeys themselves can be works of art. The project combines printmaking with the “new” media of technology: audience agency, GPS coordinates, a digital compass and online map. The audience can physically visit the original artwork or be guided virtually by an online map. Wayfinding engages the public to interpret the original sculptures through their journeys, experiences, and memories. This site-specific project is an exciting and rare instance of a temporary public art program informing and merging with the permanent public sculptures of NYC.
